Smart lock fitting across Lancashire

A good deal of Lancashire housing is older than the conventions the lock industry assumes. Stone-built terraces and cottages across the Ribble Valley, Pendle and the mill towns often have thick doors, deep reveals, and frames that were made on site rather than bought to a size.

That matters because most smart locks are built for a fairly narrow range of door thicknesses and a standard backset. On an old door the answer is sometimes a different lock, sometimes making good first, and occasionally that the door is too far gone to take one.

This is the area where we most often ask for a photo of the door edge before saying anything about price.

On the Fylde — Blackpool, Lytham, Fleetwood — and anywhere exposed on the west side, salt air is hard on exterior hardware. It pits finishes and it gets into mechanisms.

So the recommendation changes: a properly sealed unit and a finish that will survive, rather than the cheapest thing that fits. A lock that would last years inland can look tired within one winter facing the Irish Sea.

Lancashire is not one town. Preston to Burnley is a different trip from Preston to Lancaster, and none of it is ten minutes down the road from Manchester.
